Ductless

Ductless Mini-Split Installation

Ductless mini-splits solve the problems that central systems cannot: the converted attic that never gets cool, the addition nobody bothered to duct, the third-floor bedroom in a Philadelphia rowhome, the garage workshop, the home heated by radiators with no way to add air conditioning.

Shepherd HVAC installs single-zone and multi-zone ductless systems with wall-mounted, ceiling cassette, and slim-duct indoor units, so the equipment fits the room rather than dominating it.

What to Watch For

When Ductless Makes Sense

These are the situations where a mini-split is usually the best answer rather than a compromise.

  • Your home has no ductwork

Boiler and radiator homes get efficient cooling and supplemental heat without tearing open walls and ceilings.

  • You finished an attic, basement, or garage

New conditioned space almost always exceeds what the existing system was designed to carry.

  • One or two rooms are always uncomfortable

A single-zone unit fixes the problem room without replacing the whole system.

  • You built an addition

Extending existing ductwork often starves the rest of the house; a dedicated zone does not.

  • You want room-by-room control

Each indoor head has its own setpoint, so nobody argues about the thermostat.

  • You want to cut energy use

Inverter compressors modulate instead of cycling, which is where the efficiency comes from.

How It Works

Our Ductless Installation Process

  1. 1

    In-home design visit

We size each zone by room, decide on indoor unit style and placement, and plan line-set routing so the finished job looks intentional and not improvised.

  2. 2

    Written proposal

You get zone-by-zone equipment, efficiency ratings, warranty terms, and total installed price, plus financing options if you want them.

  3. 3

    Clean installation

Core drilling, wall bracket mounting, line hide covers where visible, condensate routing, and dedicated electrical — done tidily, in most cases in one day.

  4. 4

    Startup and training

Vacuum to spec, verify charge, test heating and cooling in every zone, and walk you through the remotes or app control before we go.

Pricing

What Affects the Cost

Ductless pricing scales with the number of zones and the difficulty of the installation.

  • Number of zones

Each additional indoor head adds equipment, line set, and labor.

  • Indoor unit style

Wall units are the most economical; ceiling cassettes and slim-duct units cost more and hide better.

  • Line-set routing distance

Long runs from the outdoor unit to upper floors take more material and labor.

  • Electrical work

Most systems need a dedicated circuit, and some homes need panel capacity added.

  • Cold-climate capability

Hyper-heating models that produce full output in deep cold cost more than standard equipment.
